The Water Street Project

Outside The Water Street Project the temperature was 68 degrees, inside was another story. Yes the crowds added copious body heat to the venue, but it felt like the energy and optimism of the night added a few extra degrees. Growing up in the Washington DC area, events like this simply did not exist. We plan on never taking them for granted!

If you missed the grand opening last night don’t worry: the Water Street Project has another full lineup of bands tonight from 8PM to 2AM. See the schedule HERE. - UPDATE: The events tonight (4/21) have sadly been cancelled.

Yesterday we shot a short-film preview of The Water Street Projectan 11 day temporary art exhibition organized by No Kings Collective. The film features our friend Kelly Towles, an exceptionally prodigious Washington DC muralist and street artist. Watch the film to see Kelly create his exterior mural and get a glimpse of some of the other installations in this must-attend show.

Launch day is April 19th but the opening party is Friday, April 20th at 8PM - this will be one of the best art events of the Spring/Summer, just as Submerge was last year - see you there!

De*Nada Autumn & Winter 2011 Lookbook

These De*Nada lookbook shots are much more than pretty pictures to us. They represent a major milestone in the creative development of The President Wears Prada. Not only were we responsible for the photography and styling of the shoot, the TPWP photographer also renovated and decorated the house within which the shoot took place. So what you see here is not just another photo shoot in a pretty place, but the culmination of more than a year of work!

We hope you enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed making them. Plus you should click your way over to De*Nada design’s online store and place an order for one (or a dozen) of their fantastic handmade scarves, by doing so you will be supporting one of the most creative families in Washington DC!

Models (in order of appearance) - Stephanie McArthur, Mason O’Sullivan, and Marina Petrenko:

The principal of De*Nada design (and DC resident) Virginia Arrisueño and her husband Kelly Towles have become great friends and working with them on this endeavor has been an amazing creative experience.

In the coming days we will be posting more images from this shoot, so stay tuned!

Submerge

Submerge is an art show produced by No Kings Collective, who we last covered at Activation 440. We love the current trend in DC of using vacant characterful semi-derelict spaces as venues for events. This phenomenon is due to organizations such as verdeHOUSE who help facilitate the use of these spaces. If you are reading this before Sunday the 25th of September, make sure you visit the show (there’s new exhibits unveiled daily) - details HERE.

We were inspired by the vibe of the space and felt the energy of the art, attendees and music - here are our images:

We are definitely biased since he is a good friend, but we absolutely loved this mural by Kelly Towles. His color choices and abstract background inspired us. Can we make an outfit out of this?:

SCOUT from Kelly Towles on Vimeo

It’s no secret how much we like DC artist Kelly Towles, and not just because he’s our good friend, but because his art with a genesis in graffiti and a finishing school in anime is simultaneously gorgeous, surprising and playful… One of his latest projects, the 2-story tall “Scout” mural on 12th and W St. NW is portrayed by Sebastien Tobler on this short film. I love everything about it, the beautiful Isabella, the Beirut song, the colors, the angles and most importantly how it made my entire family of 10 smile while watching it in a faraway airport.

Press statement below:

“A new mural by street artist Kelly Towles in his hometown of Washington DC. The mural and short film explore a DC neighborhood with a child like sense of exploration. A quick take on what most people should do in their own area of the city. Enjoy!”

I know Scott Schuman doesn’t think we’re a fashionable city, but he might have been persuaded to think otherwise if he had been at Redeem’s 3-year anniversary party last night. It was really fun to see some of DC’s most creative people involved in the same party - artist Kelly Towles, designer Virginia Arrisueño, DJ Cassidy, and of course the owners and staff of Redeem.

Here are some pictures we took at the party:
