When writer/director Lars von Trier releases a new project I always pay attention. His films are beautifully shot with fascinating subjects and his new project Melancholia may be the best yet, judging from the trailer above.

I was both shocked and enamored by his last feature Antichrist which is not a film for the faint of heart. Antichrist found a way to portray nature as simultaneously evil and beautiful. I was haunted by it for days afterwards.

Trier describes Melancholia as a “psychological disaster movie” and a “beautiful movie about the end of the world”. Furthermore he states that this movie will be his first movie without a happy ending, which if you have seen Antichrist, is a terrifying prospect. I would not describe anything about Antichrist as being happy, from beginning to end.

I look forward to being haunted again.
